Jason Slaikeu stands among a select group of Blugold athletes who can call themselves national champions. Not only did he sweep the conference indoor and outdoor high jump titles last spring but he also won both the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships. He established a school record of 7-1 1/2 outdoors last spring. He also joined a select group of Blugold athletes who have been named to the GTE Academic All-American first team. He still has a chance to defend his national titles with one indoor and two outdoor seasons of competition remaining. He also lettered two years in basketball but is now concentrating on track and studying for tests to get into medical school. He has been the recipient of numerous campus scholarships. A Special Olympics volunteer, biology club member, pre-med club member, and campus ambassador, Slaikeu will graduate in May, 1998 and intends on pursuing a medical career, possibly in orthopedic surgery.
