(UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's swimming & diving team broke three school records and is in third place after day one of the 2011 WIAC Championships at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center. Eau Claire currently holds third with 242 points, just behind second place La Crosse, which has 247. Stevens Point is leading the six-team field with 256 points. Julia Olson (Jr.-Faribault, Minn.) set a school record in 50-yard freestyle, breaking a record she set last year. Olson actually set the new record twice tonight on her way to winning the event with a NCAA Division III b-cut time. The record coming into today was 23.93 but she swam a 23.77 in prelims to set a new record and then broke that record with a time of 23.69 in the finals. The Blugolds also saw success in relays, breaking school records in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays. In the 200-yard relay, the Blugolds took second with a time of 1:34.42, beating the old school record by almost two seconds. In the 400-yard event, Eau Claire took third with a time of 3:54.65, more than five seconds faster than the old record. Both times were also NCAA Division III b-cut marks. While Olson claimed one individual championship on day one, Nicole Dorvinen (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) also secured a title. She took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.19. Angie Bakula (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./West) took second in the event with a mark of 5:09.79. Championship competition will continue tomorrow with preliminary races starting at 10 a.m. Finals will be begin at 6:30 p.m. |
