Sun, Dec 8, 2024 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Basketball Narrowly Defeats UW-Platteville By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team used a late second-half push to help defeat UW-Platteville 46-45 at Zorn Arena tonight. While Eau Claire was down by seven points at 12:36 in the second period, the Blugolds went on a 16-2 run that lasted until the 4:49 mark to get up by seven. Despite being up by seven, the Blugolds had trouble scoring the rest of the way and Platteville scored eight in a row to go up by one with 15 seconds left to play. Hannah Mesick (Sr.-Chatfield, Minn.) came up big for Eau Claire in the end, hitting a jumper in the paint with less than four seconds remaining to give the Blugolds a one-point lead. A subsequent turnover by Platteville on an inbound pass after the ball hit a ceiling light gave the Blugolds the ball back. The Pioneers fouled right away to send Mesick to the line and while she missed her one free throw and Platteville got it back, there was not enough time remaining to do anything with the ball. Mesick finished with 13 points to lead the game while her and Sarah Bingea (So.-Delano, Minn.) each pulled down six rebounds to lead the team. The one-point game was just the 28th in program history, and the fourth this season. Eau Claire lost all three of the one-point games coming into today and last won one on December 6, 2003 (vs. Stout, at Zorn, 70-69 in overtime). Eau Claire is now 16-12 all-time in one-point games. Eau Claire improves to 13-8 on the season and 7-5 in the WIAC. Platteville is now 5-16 overall and 1-11 in the conference. Wednesday, the Blugolds will be at UW-Stevens Point. Action will get underway at 7 p.m. |
