EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - While the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team was down 1-0 after one period, the Blugolds fought back to play UW-Superior in overtime but Eau Claire fell just short, coming away with the 3-2 loss at Hobbs Ice Center today.

Midway through the first period, Superior’s Becca Kent scored on an assist from Allie Pullar but the Blugolds answered back with a goal at 4:52 in the second period. Kelli Johnson (Sr.-Farmington, Minn.) scored the goal, her first of the season, with assists from Nikki Kothenbeutel (Fr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and Emily Larson (Fr.-Bemidji, Minn.).

The Blugolds’ second goal came just 37 seconds into the third period. The goal again came from Johnson, this time unassisted.

But the Yellowjackets took advantage of a power-play on Eau Claire’s only penalty of the game and Teegan Cassan scored at 7:29 into the third to tie the game back up.

The game-winner came at 2:06 in overtime as Ashlee Olson broke away to score an unassisted goal.

Superior held the advantage in shots with 30 to the Blugolds’ 21. Only five penalties were committed the entire game, four on the Yellowjackets and one for the Blugolds.

Mara Stormer (So.-Waunakee, Wis.) played the entire game between the pipes for Eau Claire and stopped 27 shots while allowing one goal. She falls to 1-1-1 on the season.

The Blugolds drop to 5-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in NCHA play. Superior improves to 8-2-2 on the year and 7-1-2 in the conference.

The Blugolds will be off until January 2, when they will face Hamline University (Minn.) at home. Action will get underway at 2 p.m.
