Sun, Dec 8, 2024 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Three Blugolds Named WIAC Athletes of the Week By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director MADISON, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire women's basketball player Hannah Mesick (Sr.-Chatfield, Minn.), men's diver Nick Badilla (So.-Appleton, Wis./North) and women's swimmer Nicole Dorvinen (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today. Mesick reached 1,000 points in her career as the Blugolds came up short 69-58 in their season-opener at the College of St. Benedict on Tuesday. In that game she led all players with 25 points, going 11-for-17 from the floor, and had seven rebounds. In Friday's 62-48 victory at Millikin University (Ill.) she recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds, which was also a career-high. Despite a close 69-64 loss to Marian University (Ind.) on Saturday, Mesick again had a big game, scoring 26 points, a season-high and two shy of her career record, while leading the game with eight rebounds. She went 14-for-15 from the free throw line, two short of a program record for most free throws made in a game. After the three games, she ranks 13th on the Blugolds' all-time scoring list with 1,072 points. Just 14 others have ever reached 1,000 points in their careers as Blugold women's basketball players. Mesick was also named to the Millikin Tournament All-Tournament Team after the weekend games. Dorvinen set a pool record in the 200-yard butterfly as the Blugolds beat River Falls 120-27 Friday. Her time of 2:11.33 in the event was nearly two seconds faster than the previous pool record, which was set in 2001, and she won by more than 14 seconds. She was also part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team and a 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished with the top time. On Saturday at the La Crosse Relays, she was part of two winning relay teams, taking first in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:58.18 and 850-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:38.49. Badilla broke a 13-year old pool record and had a national b-cut score of 335.70 as he won the three-meter dive while the Blugolds beat River Falls 106-28 Friday. He also took first in the one-meter event with a mark of 271.85. |
