Thu, Jan 23, 2025 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Volleyball Splits Matches at Trinity Invite By: Ashley Hofer, Sports Information Student SAN ANTONIO, Texas (UWECBlugolds.com) - Two days after being crowned WIAC co-champions, the No. 16-ranked UW-Eau Claire volleyball team tallied both a win and a loss on the first day of the Trinity National Invitational. The Blugolds scored a 3-1 win against University of Texas-Dallas but were later defeated 3-1 by New York University. The match against Dallas was close in its entirety as no set was decided by more than four points. Eau Claire took the first set to extras for the eventual 27-25 win and followed it up with a 25-22 victory in the second. Dallas regrouped and took the third 25-21, but the Blugolds finished off the Comets in the fourth, 25-21. On the way to the victory, Emily Neave (So.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) scored a match-high 14 digs while Blair Murphy (Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) and Rachel Ver Voort (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Middleton) also got in on the action with 13 apiece. Laura Slinger (Jr.-Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) and Liz Amici (Jr.-Whitewater, Wis.) put up 12 and 11 kills and Anne Satterlee (So.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) broke into double-digits with an even 10 kills. Amanda Lessner (Sr.-Watertown, Wis.) tallied the most assists of any player in the match with 43. But the tables turned in the Blugolds’ second match of the tournament against New York. Eau Claire started strong with a 25-16 win in the first set, but the Violets claimed the next three (25-20, 30-28, 25-17) to give the Blugolds their first loss of the invite. In the loss, Neave again led the Blugolds in digs, managing 13 to lead Murphy’s 12 and Ver Voort’s 11 digs. Satterlee was the only Blugolds to break the double-digit plateau in kills, tallying 15. Lessner also made 29 assists in the four sets. The Blugolds now hold 17-8 overall record. The team will compete in two matches tomorrow to conclude the Trinity National Invitational, beginning with a match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) at 11 a.m. followed by a competition against host Trinity University at 5:30 p.m. |
