(UWECBlugolds.com) - In front of a crowd of nearly 1,000 people, the No. 16-ranked UW-Eau Claire volleyball team put on a show at the annual WIAC Dig Pink Event and emerged victorious after a 3-1 clash against 10th-ranked UW-Oshkosh tonight at the McPhee Physical Education Center. The loss for Oshkosh is the first WIAC defeat since October 4, 2008, when the Blugolds defeated the Titans 3-0 in McPhee. The Blugolds went on to tie for the conference title with Oshkosh in 2008. The Blugolds and the Titans opened the match with a marathon first set. Just one point shy of clinching the first victory, Eau Claire stalled and allowed Oshkosh to push the set into extras and ultimately snatch the 35-33 win. But the Blugolds took control of the match in the ensuing sets. Eau Claire recorded several scoring streaks to take the next sets 25-15 and 25-16. The Blugolds struck the final blow to the Titans with a 25-14 fourth set. En route to the victory, the Blugolds outhit the Titans .349 to .096. Blair Murphy (Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) totaled a match-high 20 digs while Rachel Ver Voort (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Middleton) and Elizabeth Anderson (Jr.-Rib Lake, Wis.) also reached double digits with 17 and 12 digs, respectively. Liz Amici (Jr.-Whitewater, Wis.) also led both teams with 18 kills and three Blugolds - Anne Satterlee (So.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon), Anderson and Laura Slinger (Jr.-Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) – totaled an additional 11 apiece. Amanda Lessner (Sr.-Watertown, Wis.) recorded 56 assists throughout the four sets. The win lifts the Blugolds to a 15-5 record overall and 6-1 in the WIAC. Eau Claire also dealt Oshkosh its first conference loss of the season, as the Titans now sit 5-1 in the WIAC. The Titans are now 20-4 overall. Tomorrow, the Blugolds will host the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) and Viterbo University (Wis.) for annual Alumni and Senior Day. The match against St. Thomas is set to begin at 11 a.m. |
