Volleyball Defeats UW-Platteville in a Close Match

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The 16th-ranked UW-Eau Claire volleyball team won its third straight match with a 3-2 victory over UW-Platteville at Williams Fieldhouse tonight.

The Blugolds (10-3, 401 WIAC) got off to a slow start and fell 25-17 in the first set after finishing with a .000 hitting percentage (eight kills, eight errors). But Eau Claire was able to take the next two sets, 25-19 and 25-23, before falling again to the Pioneers (12-3, 3-2 WIAC) in the fourth 25-21.

The final set was an exciting one as the Blugolds found themselves down 9-7 early. A 5-0 run by the Blugolds made the score 12-9 but the Pioneers kept the set close. With the Blugolds up 14-12, Amy Bomgren (So.-Woodbury, Minn.) and Elizabeth Anderson (Jr.-Rib Lake, Wis.) combined for a block to give the Blugolds the final point to capture the match victory.

Both teams finished with season-high error totals with the Blugolds committing 29 and Platteville committing 39. The most Eau Claire had recorded in a match to this point in the season was 27 while Platteville’s previous season-high was just 23.

The Blugolds outhit Platteville .135 to .105 and had 12 blocks to the Pioneers’ five.

Two Blugolds reached double-figures in kills with Rachel Ver Voort (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Middleton) leading the way with 13. Liz Amici (Jr.-Whitewater, Wis.) finished with 12. Blair Murphy (Sr.-Hermantown, Minn.) finished with 23 digs to lead Eau Claire while Amanda Lessner (Sr.-Watertown, Wis.) had a match-high 43 assists.

The Blugolds will now head to UW-La Crosse to face the Eagles at noon Saturday.
