GREEN BAY, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - On a trip to the east side of the state, the UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 win over St. Norbert (Wis.) but was later defeated 6-1 by Division I team UW-Green Bay.

The Blugolds kicked off the day with a solid 7-2 showing against St. Norbert, with Eau Claire dropping only the No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles matches, both of which were extraordinarily close. From the No. 2 singles spot, Taylor Heltne (So.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) gave up only one game on the way to her 6-1, 6-0 win.

In doubles play, the matches also went fairly smoothly for the Blugolds. The No. 1 pair of Megan Born (Jr.-Antigo, Wis.) and Heltne earned the 8-4 win while the combination of Gretchen Bachmeier (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) and Mary Frassetto (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) picked up an 8-1 victory from the No. 3 spot.

But the Blugolds’ second contest of the day was another story. Against Green Bay, the Blugolds earned two match victories in the 6-1 meet loss, the first coming from Lexi DeMario (Fr.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) in No. 6 singles. After winning the first set 7-6 (7-3) and dropping the second 0-6, DeMario rallied to get the 10-7 win in the super tiebreaker. No. 3 duo of Bachmeier and Frassetto picked up their second win of the day, earning the only other victory against Green Bay by beating their opponents 8-5.

The day’s results change the Eau Claire’s record to 3-3 on the season. The Blugolds will next face conference opponent UW-Stevens Point at home this Friday. Competition is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
