Women's Hockey Wins One Over Finlandia

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team picked up its third straight win with a 7-1 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.

Eau Claire improves to 9-3-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play, while Finlandia remains winless with a 0-12 overall and 0-7 conference record.

The Blugolds took a 4-0 lead in the first period, scoring all three goals within six minutes of each other. At 6:24 Lauren Havard (Sr.-San Angelo, Texas/Araphaoe) found the back of the net on a power-play to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Havard once again scored and Margaret Campbell (Sr.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) increased the Blugolds' lead 20 seconds later with her third goal of the season. It took only two more minutes for Eau Claire to strike again. Jackie McKay (Fr.-Franklin Park, Ill./East Leyden) recorded her third goal of the year on a power-play to push Eau Claire's lead to four.

Finlandia kept fighting, however, and Kendra Benson found the net for the Lions just over a minute into the second to make the score 4-1. Chaslyn Duffek assisted on the power-play goal.

Just over a minute after that Eau Claire struck back to increase its' lead back to four. Kristin Faber (So.-Austin, Minn.) scored the goal for Eau Claire, while Toni Simones (Fr.-Rosemount, Minn./South St. Paul) picked up the assist.

Eau Claire was not done for the night though. Beth Dittrich (Jr.-Roseville, Minn.) recoreded an even-strength goal at 12:26 in the third on an assist from Faber. Less than four minutes later, Eau Claire scored one last time, behind the stick of Campbell for her second goal of the evening. Lynne Erspamer (Fr.-Marquette, Mich.) assisted on the Blugolds' final goal.

For the game Eau Claire went 3-7 on the power-play, while Finlandia was 1-9. The Blugolds outshot the Lions 37-9 for the game and allowed now Finlandia shots on the net in the final period.

Danika Porter (So.-Rosemount, Minn./South St. Paul) secured the win for Eau Claire in-goal, improving her season record to 3-1-0. For the night she accumulated eight saves while allowing one goal. Annika Danielson was in the net for the Lions the entire night and dropped her season record to 0-10. She stopped 30 Eau Claire shots while allowing seven goals.

The Blugolds will be back at home next Friday for a game against UW-Stevens Point. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Center.
