WHITEWATER, Wis. - Despite winning its first meet to advance to the championship round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (WIAC) automatic qualifier tournament for the NCAA Division III Championships, the UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team was stopped short today.

In the first meet of the day, Eau Claire defeated River Falls 5-1 before falling to Whitewater 8-1 in the championship. UW-Whitewater will make its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament, as they are the WIAC's automatic qualifier.

Gina Dahl (So.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) was the only Blugold today to pick up wins in both of her matches on the singles side at No. 2. She defeated River Falls' Cassie Wood 6-1, 6-2 and then won by default to Whitewater's Lauren Fahl. Erin Welch (So.-Tomah, Wis.) won once today at No. 4 singles, a 6-0, 6-0 victory over River Falls' Katie Anderson. Also winning one time in singles was Sarah Riordan (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./North) in the No. 1 spot with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Kathryne Ostrowski of River Falls.

In doubles play, Riordan and Dahl picked up a win at No. 1 with an 8-5 victory over Ostrowski and Anderson. Kristie Carlson (Sr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) and Welch also won at No. 2 doubles against Wood and Stacia Kozel 8-3.
