Women's Tennis Narrowly Defeats I-94 Rival Stout

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team defeated Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival UW-Stout 5-4 at the Simpson Outdoor Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Eau Claire went 2-1 on the doubles side today, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. Sarah Riordan (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./North) and Gina Dahl (So.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) defeated Stout's duo of Allie Hinman and Kiersten Johnson 9-8 (7-5) at No. 1. Kirsten Marciniak (Fr.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and Emma Grosse (Fr.-Farmington, Minn.) also took a victory in the No. 3 spot for the Blugolds, winning 8-5 over Sarah Smith and Lindsey Luberda.

In singles play, the Blugolds split with the Blue Devils. Kristie Carlson (Sr.-Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) gave up the least amount of points for the Blugolds, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 over Hinman. Erin Welch (So.-Tomah, Wis.) also defeated Farchmin at No. 4 singles by scores of 6-4, 6-1, while Dahl took down Jodie Czech by scores of 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. Despite a close match at No. 6 the entire day, Michelle Reinders (Fr.-Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) came up short to Luberda who won 6-1, 5-7, 10-4. Riordan also played in a super-tiebreaker and came up short to Hinman 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 at No. 1 singles.

Next weekend the Blugolds will head to Whitewater to compete in the WIAC Team Tournament. Eau Claire will take on River Falls, while Whitewater will face La Crosse at 9 a.m. Saturday. The winners will advance to play each other at 1 p.m. to determine the WIAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
