The Blugolds and the Tommies went back and forth until a late rally in the fourth game where the Blugolds went ahead for good. It took five games for the Blugolds now 16-7 to take down the Tommies 20-4. The Tommies who are ranked 10th in the nation are a team that beat the Blugolds 3-0 earlier this season with scores of 30-14, 30-24, and 30-27. After a 30-26 loss in the first game the Blugolds put together a 30-28 victory in the second game. The Tommies jumped all over the Blugolds and took the third game 30-12. The Blugolds were down 24-16 in the fourth game but rallied back to win 34-32. This proved to be the turning point in the match as Eau Claire went on to beat St. Thomas in the fifth and final game by a score of 15-12. Katie Fox (Jr.- Chippewa Falls, WI/Chi-Hi) and Abby Freiborg (Jr.- Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) led the way for the Blugolds with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Emily Haese (Fr.- Chippewa Falls, WI/McDonell/UW-Green Bay) had 60 assists for the Blugolds while Lissa Martinez (Sr.- Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) and Nikki Peterson (Sr.- North St. Paul, MN/North) contributed 11 and 10 kills for the Blugolds. Eau Claire as a team had 70 kills, 24 blocks, and 66 assists in tonight's victory over St. Thomas. Heather Harnell (Sr.- Minnetonka, MN), Martinez, and Peterson were honored by their teammates, coaches, and fans during Senior Night tonight. The Blugolds will be back in action this weekend during Parent/Alumni Weekend. Eau Claire will take on WIAC opponents UW-Platteville on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and UW-La Crosse on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Both games will take place in McPhee on the Eau Claire campus.
