Women's Tennis Tops Eagles In Conferece Match

Eau Claire, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team was able to get back on the winning track against UW-La Crosse early Saturday afternoon.

With their 6-3 victory over La Crosse, the Blugolds improved to 14-4 overall, 8-3 in dual meets, and 5-1 in conference play.

The Blugolds took four of six matches in singles competition. All four of the victories were claimed in straight sets. Sarah Riordan (Sr.- Appleton, WI/North) played No. 1 singles for the Blugolds, and she gave the team exactly what they were looking for with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory. The other Blugolds who delivered victories were Brenna McCormick (So.-Greendale, WI) with scores of 6-3 and 6-2, Erin Welch (So.-Tomah, WI) with scores of 6-4 and 6-1, and Liz Deprey (Sr.- Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) with scores of 6-2 and 6-4. Gina Dahl (So.-Fort Atkinson, WI) and Kristie Carlson (Sr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) were on the losing side of the equation. Dahl lost her match 6-4, 6-4. Carlson lost her match 6-3, 6-0.

The Blugolds were equally as effective in doubles play winning two of three matches. Carlson and McCormick teamed up to win 8-6, and Deprey and Welch took care of business by winning 8-5. The other Blugold tandem of Riordan and Dahl was defeated 8-1.

Up next for the Blugolds is the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship. The tournament will take place in Madison, WI on October 20th and 21st. For more information about the WIAC Championship tournament log on to www.uwsa.edu/wiac/tennis.
