Volleyball To Make WIAC Run this Week

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team will face three conference opponents on the road this week as it looks to move up in the standings.

The matches are against UW-Stout on Wednesday, No. 3 UW-Whitewater on Friday and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.

The Blugolds are 12-6 overall and 1-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) matches. They are fourth in the WIAC and have placed second in all four tournaments they?ve participated in.

With 3.48 kills per game, Abby Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) leads Eau Claire's attack. Lissa Martinez (Sr.-Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) is next with 3.06. Emily Haese (Jr.-Mishicot) supports the Blugold offense with 12.11 assists per game, most for Eau Claire. The 2.80 team aces per game rank second in conference standings and Freiborg's personal total of 50 sits first.

Freiborg has shined on defense as well, ranking second on the team in digs per game on a 3.91 mark. Heather Harnell (Sr.-Minnetonka, MN) leads that department with 4.63. Katie Fox (Jr.-Chippewa Falls/Chi-Hi) has knocked down 39 this season to lead in blocks. As a team, Eau Claire hits .172, eighth in the conference.

The Blue Devils are 9-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Those marks put them last in the WIAC. They faced Eau Claire in the latest tourney, the UW-Platteville Tournament. Eau Claire took the three games 30-26, 30-27, and 30-23. All-time, Eau Claire is 54-27 against Stout and has won the past six matches. Stout's .194 hitting percentage is seventh in the WIAC.

Kendra Pagel and Linda Meyer are the offensive forces for Stout with 2.69 kills per game and 3.08, respectively. Jenna Welsh has 10.02 assists per game while Casey Huntoon takes the lead in digs, for both the team and the conference, at 6.42 per game. The team total of 21.84 digs per game is second in the conference.

On Friday at 7 p.m., Eau Claire faces third-ranked Whitewater, which is second in the WIAC. The Warhawks are 16-2 in all games and 2-0 versus conference foes. The Blugolds are 18-34 historically against Whitewater and have lost the past four matches. The Warhawks' .210 hitting percentage is third in the conference.

Carley Polk sits at 3.62 kills per game while Kelly Annen is behind her with 3.50. Kelly Sorenson has an even 3.00. Kate Lazotte's 12.43 assists per game feed the attack. On defense, Kristina Conlin collects 4.88 digs per game while five others put up totals above 3.00 per game. Polk is tops in blocks with 52, but Sarah Theis has 45.

The Stevens Point match on Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Pointers are behind Whitewater at third in the conference. They claim the position with a 13-5 overall record and a2-0 WIAC record. Eau Claire has dominated Stevens Point, going 41-26 all-time against the Pointers with a 14-match winning streak that stretches back to 1999. With a .204 mark, Stevens Point ranks fifth in the conference for hitting percentage.

Shelly Maus' 4.07 kills per game are most for Stevens Point, as are Jill Wittmann's 8.21 assists per game. Maus' 4.07 are also most in the conference.

Stevens Point is solid defensively. As a team, the 2.61 blocks per game are second in the conference. Maus has racked up 106 blocks, which is best in the WIAC. Katrina Lulich and Amanda Mix have also been defensive forces with 4.50 and 3.71 digs per game.

Wednesday's match and Friday's match both start at 7 p.m. The Saturday contest versus the Pointers is at 2 p.m. All three are on the road.
