Thu, Jan 23, 2025 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Tennis Splits First Two Dual Meets Posted: Saturday, September 1, 2007 DECORAH, IOWA - A veteran UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Craig Monson, opened the season with a convincing 9-0 triumph over Augustana College of Rock Island, Illinois; and then was upended by perennial Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference power Luther College, 8-1, here Saturday. The Blugolds had little trouble with Augustana, which finished fourth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin last year, winning the top four singles matches in straight sets. The Blugolds, who were 15-6 in dual meets last season and finished second to UW-La Crosse in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, got singles wins from Gina Dahl (So.-Ft. Atkinson) at No. 1, Sarah Riordan (Sr.-Appleton/North) at No. 2, Brenna McCormick (So.-Greendale) at No. 3, Kristie Carlson (Sr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) at No. 4, Erin Welch (So.-Tomah)at No. 5 and Whitney Hay (Sr.-New Richmond) at No. 6. Riordan and Dahl combined for a win at No. 1 doubles while Carlson and McCormick claimed a victory at No. 2 doubles and Kristin Neuman (Sr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon) and Liz Deprey (Sr.-Green Bay/Notre Dame) were triumphant at No. 3 doubles. Against Luther, which the Blugolds beat by a 6-3 margin in Eau Claire last fall, only McCormick was able to claim a win as she beat freshman Brynne Zinnecker, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. The only other Blugolds to stretch their matches to a third set were Riordan at No. 1 singles and Dahl at No. 2 singles. Luther has won 23 of the past 25 IIAC crowns but last season was one of the two the Norse did not win as Coe claimed the championship. The Blugolds will face Edgewood College in a dual meet next Friday in Madison, then compete in the Whitewater Invite on Sept. 8.
