Women's Hockey Drops One To St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, MN - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team fell tonight to St. Olaf College (MN) by a score of 5-2 at the Northfield Ice Arena.

The Blugolds fall to an overall record of 4-7-1. The Oles improve to an overall record of 5-2-1. St. Olaf has now won three straight against the Blugolds, but Eau Claire still owns the advantage in the all-time series with an 8-6-1 record.

The Oles got on the scoreboard first when Katie Bennett scored an even-handed goal with 9:48 remaining in the first period. St. Olaf extended its lead to two, 49 seconds later on a Kim McClintock goal. The Blugolds got on the board with a goal by Tara Hayner (Sr.-Stillwater, MN) with 50 seconds left in the first period to make the score 2-1. Martina Korinek (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) assisted on the goal.

The Blugolds out-shot St. Olaf 10-7 in the first period.

St. Olaf would score first in the second period with a goal by Susannah Brokl to make the score 3-1 St. Olaf with 14:25 remaining in the period. Katie Bennett then scored her second goal of the game for the Oles, a power play goal, with eight minutes left to go in the second period to make the score 4-1. Eau Claire cut the lead down to 4-2 with 1:11 to go in the period after a Michelle Stohr (Fr.-South St. Paul, MN) goal. Allie Campbell (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) had the assist on the goal.

St. Olaf sealed the game in the third period when Katie Bennett scored the hat trick with a little less than two minutes to play to give the Oles a 5-2 victory. The Blugolds out-shot St. Olaf 16-2 in the third period, but could not mount a comeback.

The Blugolds out-shot St. Olaf 37-14 in the game, but were 0-for-6 on the power play. The Oles were 1-for-2 with a man advantage. Mikaela Jobman (Fr.-St. Paul, MN/Cretin Derham Hall) picked up the loss in net for the Blugolds as she finished with eight saves. Sarah Mills had 35 saves for St. Olaf.

The Blugolds will face St. Olaf once again tomorrow afternoon with action beginning at 3 p.m.
