2007 Volleyball Athletes of the Week

Rachel Ver Voort, Outside Hitter, 5-8, Freshman, Madison, Wis./Middleton
Although the Blugolds went 1-2 during the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, they were selected to the NCAA post-season tournament after finishing with a 22-10 overall record. In three games last week, Ver Voort had 41 kills and hit above .260 each match. She also finished with 19 digs and seven blocks (three solos and four assists).

Katie Fox, Middle Hitter, 5-9, Junior, Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chi-Hi
The Blugolds completed the regular season this weekend, finishing with a 3-1 record at the Elmhurst College Invitational II and a 21-8 record overall. At the event, Fox was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Blugolds in total kills for a match twice and had the best hitting percentage in every match. In the 3-0 victory over Marian College on Friday, Fox hit .611 and tallied a team-leading 12 kills. The second match of the day was lost by the Blugolds 1-3, but Fox again hit well, with 12 kills and a .529 attack percentage. Fox again led the team in kills in the first win on Saturday over Concordia-Chicago, with 13, and also hit .500. In the final match, a 3-0 victory over North Park University, Fox her best hitting average of the invite, a .647, and also finished with 11 more kills. In all, Fox had 47 kills, and also added 14 blocks (five solos, nine assists) and three digs.

The Blugolds won all three of its matches this week with a 3-2 victory over #10 St. Thomas on Tuesday, a 3-1 victory over UW-Platteville on Friday, and a 3-0 win over #14 UW-La Crosse on Saturday. In Tuesday and Friday's wins, Fox led the Blugolds in kills and hitting percentage, and tied for best hitting percentage on Saturday. Against the Tommies, Fox had 15 kills and hit .379. On Friday against the Pioneers, Fox had a season high 18 kills and registered a .419 hitting percentage. On Saturday, Fox had her second best hitting percentage of the season with a .471 average, and accumulated 11 more kills. Over the entire three matches, Fox also compiled 14 block assists and three solo blocks.

Abby Freiborg, Outside Hitter, 5-8, Junior, Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West
This week, the Blugolds went 2-1, defeating UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point, but losing a close one to UW-Whitewater. In Wednesday's 3-0 victory over UW-Stout, Freiborg led the team in kills, service aces and digs. She had a third of the teams' kills, for a total of 20, and a hitting percentage of .319. She also tallied 21digs and added four service aces in the win. In Friday's 2-3 loss to Whitewater, Freiborg also led the team in kills with 17 and had 14 digs. In the 3-0 victory on Saturday over UW-Stevens Point, Freiborg again led the team with 13 kills on 27 attempts, a .407 hitting percentage, four service aces, and tied for second on the team with 12 digs. Adding eight services aces this week, Freiborg increased her total to 58, which leads the conference. Freiborg leads the Blugolds with 238 kills on the season and is second on the team with 258 digs.

Emily Haese, Setter, 5-6, Junior, Mishicot, WI
Haese was named to the All-Tournament team at the UW-Platteville Tournament, helping lead the Blugolds to a 3-1 record. Haese had a total of 181 assists in 13 games, a 13.92 per game average, and also compiled 36 digs, six kills, three block assists and two service aces.

Abby Freiborg, Outside Hitter, 5-8, Junior, Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West
In the Blugolds conference opening match this weekend, Freiborg led the Blugolds in kills and service aces, and tied with two other players with 11 digs. Going into the game against Oshkosh on Friday, Freiborg was 13th in the conference in kills with 126, but she was able to add 16 to that total. Freiborg also is first in the conference in service aces and extended her lead Friday, adding five more to the 34 she had going into the weekend.

Heather Harnell, Libero, 5-9, Senior, Minnetonka, MN
Harnell led the Blugolds in digs this weekend at the St. Benedict Holiday InnVitational in St. Joseph, with a total of 76. She also had five service aces as the Blugolds finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Abby Freiborg, 5-8, Junior, Outside Hitter, Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West
This weekend, Freiborg helped lead the Blugolds to the championship match at the Augsburg Invite. Freiborg led the Blugolds with 43 kills and 20 service aces. She was also second on the team with 52 digs. Freiborg's 20 service aces also led all players at the tournament, and she was named to the All-Tournament team.

Nikki Peterson, 6-1, Senior, Right Hitter/Middle Hitter, North St. Paul, MN/North
Peterson hit .348 as the Blugolds finished in second place with a record of 3-1 at their own Labor Day Classic this weekend. The Blugolds only loss came against Gustavus Adolphus, who received seven votes in this year's AVCA preseason poll. Peterson had 44 kills and six blocks assists. She was also named to the eight-player all-tournament team.
