2002-03 Tennis Athletes of the Week

April 28, 2003-May 4, 2003

Doubles: Alison Hover, Sr., St. Cloud, MN (Tech) and Jenny Stafford, Jr., Cross Plains (Middleton)
Hover and Stafford put on strong performances in NCAA regional competition versus St. Thomas this weekend, winning each of their singles matches while combining for a win in doubles play. Hover came back after losing the first set to defeat Sarah Lee 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) at No. 1 singles while Stafford defeated Julie Wieden 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (8) at No. 2 singles. In doubles action Hover and Stafford downed the duo of Julie Wieden and Jodi Dmohoski 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

April 7, 2003-April 13, 2003

Molly Cadwell, Jr., Fridely, MN
Cadwell had an excellent weekend at the Women's Midwest Invitational as she went 3-1 on the tournament and led the Blugolds to a fifth place finish. In a first round 5-4 Eau Claire victory over Carleton, Cadwell led a doubles sweep as she and teammate Megan Tauer won at the No. 2 doubles spot 8-5. After a tough loss to Denison, Cadwell and Tauer rebounded with an 8-4 victory over St. Catherines. In the Blugolds fifth place meet, Cadwell and Tauer earned their third win of the weekend with a magnificent 9-7 victory over the No. 2 doubles tandem of Albion.

March 31, 2003-April 7, 2003

Megan Tauer, Sr., Stillwater, MN and Molly Cadwell, Jr., Fridely, MN
Tauer won both her singles and doubles match in a contest with Wittenberg while leading the Blugolds to a 7-2 victory. Tauer had an impressive singles victory as she won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 competing in the No. 4 singles spot. In doubles, Tauer teamed up with Molly Cadwell and dominated the competition with an 8-1 victory.

March 24, 2003-March 30, 2003

Doubles: Megan Tauer, Sr., Stillwater, MN and Molly Cadwell, Jr., Fridely, MN
The doubles pair displayed consistency and competitiveness all weekend in both singles and doubles draws. As a doubles team they advanced to the finals, nearly unseating Eau Claire's top duo. In singles play Cadwell lost to the No. 2 seed in a hotly contested quarterfinal while Tauer advanced to the semifinals by upsetting the No. 4 seed in the quarterfinals. In the semis she lost to the eventual champion in a good competitive match.

March 17, 2003-March 23, 2003

Alison Hover, Sr., St. Cloud, MN (Tech.)
Hover led the Blugolds to three dual meet victories last week by posting two wins in singles play at the No. 1 position and also scoring two victories in doubles competition with Jennifer Stafford at the No. 1 doubles spot. On Tuesday, Hover led the Blugolds to a 9-0 victory over Wellesley by winning her singles match in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 and topping the No. 1 doubles team from Wellesley 8-5. The next day, in a dual meet with Campbellsville, Hover and Stafford dominated in doubles winning 6-1, 6-1 and leading Eau Claire to another 9-0 victory. Later the same day, Hover made a great comeback in singles play against Limestone as she dropped the first set 1-6 but bounced back to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-2

Jenny Stafford, Jr., Cross Plains, WI (Middleton)
Stafford played excellent in three Blugold victories last week going a perfect 2-0 in singles play and winning two doubles matches with teammate Alison Hover. In a 9-0 Eau Claire victory over Wellesley on Tuesday, Stafford dominated her No. 2 singles match winning 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 1 double match against Wellesley, Stafford and Hover earned an 8-5 victory. On Wednesday, Stafford and Hover defeated the No. 1 singles team of Campbellsville 6-1, 6-1 in leading Eau Claire to another 9-0 victory. Against Limestone later in the same day, Stafford earned another singles victory in the No. 2 position with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in leading the Blugolds to a 7-2 win.

February 10, 2003-February 16, 2003

Singles: Lynn Morris, Fr., Monticell, IN (Twin Lakes)
Morris set an individual school record for the second time this year in the uneven bars in a dual meet with WIAC opponent UW-Oshkosh. Her score of 9.15 tops her own record of 9.075 which she set earlier this year. Her performance in the event helped the Blugolds also break the team record for highest score in the uneven bars with a score of 42.95. Despite losing to the Titans, the Blugolds set a new team record for highest overall score as they posted a 176.650.

October 14, 2002-October 20, 2002

Singles: Alison Hover, Sr., St. Cloud, MN/Tech.
Won all three of her matches in straight sets to win the No. 1 singles flight at the WIAC Women's Tennis Championship. She won the flight being seeded second in No. 1 singles and avenged her only loss this season against Debra Ashenbrenner from Oshkosh, beating her in the championship match 6-1, 6-3.

Doubles: Alison Hover, Sr., St. Cloud, MN/Tech and Laurie Alonso, Fr., Austin, MN
Won both their matches at the WIAC Women's Tennis Championship to capture the No. 1 doubles championship. They won the championship match in convincing fashion by a score of 8-2.

October 7, 2002-October 13, 2002

Singles: Becky Hollinger, So., Jefferson
Won both of her matches against River Falls and Stevens Point. She lost only three games in two matches and helped the Blugolds defeat both of their conference opponents this week by scores of 9-0.

Doubles: Jenny Stafford, Jr., Cross Plains/Middleton & Megan Tauer, Sr., Stillwater, MN
Did not drop a single game in two matches against conference opponents River Falls and Stevens Point this week. Their consecutive wins of 8-0 helped the Blugolds stay undefeated on the season.

September 30, 2002-October 6, 2002

Singles: Katie Steffes, Fr., St. Joseph, MN/Apollo
Won both of her matches in straight sets this weekend. In two matches against conference opponents she lost only five games to remain undefeated in the No. 6 singles flight.

Doubles: Alison Hover (Sr.-St. Cloud, MN/Tech) and Laurie Alonso (Fr.-Austin, MN)
In two matches against Oshkosh and La Crosse they won big matches to help Eau Claire defeat both conference opponents. They continued their unbeaten season in the No. 1 doubles flight this year with a 4-0 record on the season.

September 23, 2002-September 29, 2002

Singles: Megan Tauer, Sr., Stillwater, MN
Tauer won five matches in the Fall Invitational hosted by Gustavus Adolphus and advanced to the final before losing in three sets to Tara Huinker from Luther College. Coach Gillman said Tauer's play was consistent all tournament.

Doubles: Becky Hollinger(So.-Jefferson) and Molly Cadwell (Jr.-Fridley, MN)
At the ITA Midwest Regionals Hollinger and Cadwell lost their opening match, then won four straight matches, battling from behind several times, to win the consolation title. Head coach Tom Gillman pointed out that most of the doubles teams entered are school's No. 1 and No. 2 teams but this was the Blugolds' No. 3 squad so he labeled it a great accomplishment.

September 16, 2002-September 22, 2002

Singles: Jenny Stafford, Jr., Cross Plains/Middleton
Won her No. 3 singles match in straight sets and helped the Blugolds defeat Luther College 7-2. She remains unbeaten on the year with a record of 3-0.

Doubles: Becky Hollinger, So., Jefferson & Molly Cadwell, Jr., Fridley, MN
Won their No. 3 doubles match against Luther College. The two came back from a 7-5 deficit to take the match 9-7 and help the Blugolds beat Luther College.

September 9, 2002-September 15, 2002

Doubles: Jenny Stafford, Jr., Cross Plains/Middleton & Megan Tauer, Sr., Stillwater, MN
Won the No. 2 doubles match in a dual meet against UW-Stout by an 8-2 score. The duo is 5-0 on the season after previously capturing the No. 1 doubles title in the Warhawk Invite. Head coach Tom Gillman called their win against Stout 'their most consistent performance thus far.'

September 3, 2002-September 8, 2002

Singles: Laurie Alonso, Fr., Austin, MN
Won the No. 2 singles title in the Whitewater Invitational and went 4-0 for the weeknd. She didn't lose a set the entire weekend.

Doubles: Becky Hollinger, So., Jefferson & Molly Cadwell, Jr., Fridley, MN
Lost only one match and finished runner-up at No. 2 doubles in the Whitewater Invitational, losing a 3-set match to a La Crosse duo in the finals.
