2009 Softball Athletes of the Week

April 20, 2009-April 26, 2009

Position: Aleisha Harper, Freshman, Secondbase, Mondovi, Wis./Eau Claire North
As the Blugolds split four games this week, Harper led the Blugolds with nine hits in 13 at-bats (.692 batting average) while driving in three runs and scoring four of her own. In the Blugolds' 12-1 victory over St. Mary's University she went 4-for-4 while scoring twice. In the Blugolds' 9-1 win in game two over St. Mary's she went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Harper also led the Blugolds with two of the team's four hits on the day as the team fell short to Whitewater in both games. She kept her 10-game hitting streak alive with her two hits against Jessica Stang, one of the nation's top pitchers this season. Harper also picked up one stolen base in one attempt and recorded seven putouts and seven assists.

Pitcher: Bri Sturm, Senior, Righthanded Pitcher, Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa
Pitching in two games, Sturm picked up a win and a loss as the Blugolds' defeated St. Mary's University 9-1 Thursday but fell short to UW-Whitewater 0-2 Friday. In Thursday's victory, she pitched six innings and allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out five. Friday against the Warhawks she struck out one in six innings in the circle while allowing two earned runs and seven hits. For the weekend she recorded a 1.75 ERA while she holds a 2.91 ERA on the season.

April 13, 2009-April 19, 2009

Position: Ainsley Klar, Junior, Thirdbase, La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas
With the Blugolds going 5-3 this week, Klar hit .450 as she went 9-for-20. In the Blugolds' second game against St. Norbert on Wednesday, Klar led the game as she finished 3-for-3 while driving in one run and picking up two runs of her own. In the Blugolds' doubleheader against Stevens Point she recorded a total of three hits in five at-bats while scoring twice and picking up two RBIs. In the first game against the Pointers she hit one double and the first home run of her collegiate career. For the week she finished with four runs and five RBIs while being walked three times. She recorded four putouts and 14 assists for the week.

Pitcher: Ashley Meinen, Freshman, Righthanded Pitcher, Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell
Meinen went 3-1 on the week as she made five appearances, including one start, in the Blugolds' eight games. She pitched a total of 17 innings while allowing 20 hits and a total of eight runs, only three of which were earned, while recording seven strikeouts. In one game against Luther College on Monday and another against St. Norbert College on Wednesday, she allowed no earned runs while picking up one strikeout. Thursday against St Scholastica, Meinen struck out two after pitching four innings while allowing just one earned run. She also pitched both games of the Blugolds' doubleheader Saturday and recorded two victories as she was in the circle for a total of 9.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out four. For the week she had an ERA of 1.24 while she holds an ERA of 1.93 and a record of 7-3 on the season.

April 6, 2009-April 12, 2009

Position: Sara Baumgartner, Sophomore, Centerfielder, Arcadia, Wis.
Baumgartner hit .538 to lead the Blugolds as they went 3-1 this week against WIAC opponents. In the Blugolds 6-2 win over UW-Stout to start the week, she led the team as she went 3-for-4. In the second game against Stout she was 1-for-1 while being walked once as the Blugolds fell short 8-0 in five innings. In the Blugolds 7-6 win in 10 innings against UW-Superior on Friday, Baumgartner went 1-for-4 while driving in one run. She was also walked once and scored two runs of her own to lead the team, one of which came when she hit a home run. In the second game against UW-Superior, a 10-2 victory in six innings, she was 2-for-4 and had a game-high two RBIs while she scored one run. For the week she led the Blugolds with seven hits, including three extra-base hits, 13 total bases and tied for a team-best three runs and three RBIs. She also recorded two putouts and an assist with no errors for a 1.000 fielding percentage while she also had a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.

Pitcher: Jenny Ross, Sophomore, Lefthanded Pitcher, Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley
Ross made appearances in all four of the Blugolds' games this week as they went 3-1. In Friday's doubleheader she was credited with both wins to improve to 10-1 on the season. To open the week she pitched one inning in the Blugolds 6-2 win against UW-Stout and 1.1 innings in the Blugolds 8-0 loss in game two. Friday she pitched 5.2 innings as the Blugolds defeated UW-Superior 7-6 in 10 innings in game one while she started and pitched five innings in the second game, which the Blugolds went on to win 10-2 in six innings. In the Blugolds extra-innings win against Superior Friday, she entered the game with the Yellowjackets up 3-2 and helped the Blugolds come from behind to win. For the week she struck out 19 batters in 45 at-bats and gave up no earned runs while allowing just six hits. With her 0.00 ERA for the week, she now holds a 1.23 ERA for the season.

March 30, 2009-April 5, 2009

Position: Katie Stalker, Junior, Second Base/Shortstop, Madison, Wis./La Follette
The Blugolds opened conference play this week, winning five games while dropping one. For the week, Stalker had a batting average of .684 as she went 13-for-19. Stalker drove in three runs while scoring seven of her own. She stole seven bases and was walked five times. Stalker batted 1.000 twice, going 3-for-3 against UW-River Falls on April 2 and UW-Platteville on April 3. She scored four runs against UW-La Crosse in game one of the doubleheader on April 4 while also stealing three bases, both of which were season-highs for the Blugolds this season. Stalker also had 14 putouts and 13 assists.

Pitcher: Jenny Ross, Sophomore, Lefthanded Pitcher, Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley
Ross started one game this weekend while making a total of four appearances as the Blugolds opened conference action with a 5-1 record. Ross pitched a total of 16.2 innings allowing 18 hits and seven runs, four of which were earned. She pitched a total of 14 strikeouts, facing 74 batters. Ross improved to 8-1 on the season after being credited with wins against UW-River Falls in both games on April 2 and a win in game one of the doubleheader against UW-La Crosse on April 4. In game two against UW-River Falls, Ross pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters. For the season she has an ERA of 1.55.

March 23, 2009-March 29, 2009

Position: Sara Baumgartner, Sophomore, Centerfield, Arcadia, Wis.
With the Blugolds winning three games Sunday, all in five innings, to open home play, Baumgartner led the Blugolds with five hits in eight at-bats (.625) while scoring six runs. In the Blugolds' first game against Northland College, Baumgartner had two hits and a game-high two runs as the Blugolds went on to win 9-1. In game one of a doubleheader against St. Scholastica, Baumgartner recorded three hits in three at-bats while scoring two runs in the Blugolds' 11-0 victory. In game two she reached base once on a fielder's choice and another time on a walk as she scored both times. The Blugolds went on to win that game 10-1. In the three games, Baumgartner had two extra-base hits, a double and a triple, recorded two RBIs, had a slugging percentage of 1.000 with eight total bases. She also had two putouts.

This weekend the Blugolds picked up three wins, defeating Northland College 9-1, and St. Scholastica twice, 11-0 and 10-1, all in five innings of play each game. Meinen recorded one win as she pitched against Northland. In her five innings of play she faced 20 batters and allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out three. For the season, Meinen holds an ERA of 1.33.

March 9, 2009-March 22, 2009

Position: Katie Stalker, Junior, Second Base/Shortstop, Madison, Wis./La Follette
Stalker started 11 games and hit .500 for the Blugolds as they opened their 2009 season with a 9-3 overall record at the Tucson Invitational Games this week. Against Lakeland College (March 16) and Pomona-Pitzer College (March 19) she was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and also scored two runs in each of those games to lead the Blugolds. For the week she recorded 20 hits and 17 runs in 40 at-bats. A season ago Stalker had only 23 hits in 44 games played. Stalker leads the Blugolds this season with 20 total bases and six stolen bases. She also picked up two RBIs on the spring break trip.

Pitcher: Jenny Ross, Sophomore, Lefthanded Pitcher, Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley
Ross started three games and made eight appearances on the mound as the Blugolds opened the 2009 season at the Tucson Invitational Games this week, where they recorded nine wins and three losses. Ross saw her first action of the season in the Blugolds' second game of the season against Central College (Iowa), which the Blugolds went on to win 7-2. She went on to record five strikeouts while allowing three hits and one run in that game. Against Edgewood College the next day she secured a season-high eight strikeouts as she allowed two hits and no runs in four innings as the Blugolds beat the Eagles 5-3. In her eight games, she picked up 29 strikeouts while allowing eight runs, seven of which were earned, and 20 hits, 10 of which came in a 6-4 loss to Central College on Friday. For the season Ross holds a 1.69 ERA and a 4-1 record with two saves.
