2011-12 Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week

January 23, 2012-January 29, 2012

Swimming: Jake McDade, Freshman, Monona, Wis./Monona Grove
McDade won two events Saturday as the Blugolds competed against UW-Whitewater. After more than 10 minutes swimming in the 1,000-yard freestyle, McDade grabbed a narrow victory with a time of 10:03.07 while the second place finisher from Whitewater finished with a mark of 10:03.80. McDade also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.18.

Diving: Nick Badilla, Junior, Appleton, Wis./North
Badilla had a good day on the boards Saturday against UW-Whitewater. He won both the one and three-meter dives, finishing the three-meter with a score of 304.65 while winning the one-meter dive with a mark of 286.95.

January 16, 2012-January 22, 2012

Swimming: Jake McDade, Freshman, Monona, Wis./Monona Grove
McDade won two events as the Blugolds finished in third place at the UW-Stevens Point Invite on Saturday. He took first in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:10.56, 13 seconds in front of the rest of the field, while winning the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.85. McDade was also eighth in the 200-yard freestyle.

December 5, 2011-December 11, 2011

Swimming: Alex Card, Sophomore, Prior Lake, Minn.
Card helped the Blugolds to a 123-117 victory over UW-La Crosse on Saturday with two individual wins while he was also part of a winning relay team. Card took the top spot in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:00.60 and followed with a top finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 48.13. He also led off the winning 800-yard freestyle team and had one of the top times in the conference this season in his 200-yard portion of the race. The Blugolds won the relay with a time of 7:17.45, almost nine seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Swimming: Alex Strom, Sophomore, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata
Strom played a key role in helping the Blugolds to a 123-117 victory over UW-La Crosse on Saturday. He was fifth in the 200-yard IM, but then had to swim the 500-yard freestyle and come back one event later to swim the 200-yard breaststroke. The team needed Strom to get at least fourth in the 500 free to help the cause, and he took third and followed with a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke. His strong swims helped set the Blugolds up for the win as the Blugolds' 800-yard freestyle relay team won the final event of the day to edge the Eagles.

Diving: Nick Badilla, Junior, Appleton, Wis./North
Badilla won both the one and three-meter dives this weekend as the Blugolds beat UW-La Crosse 123-117. He won the three-meter with a score of 324.95 while winning the one-meter with a score of 275. Both marks were national cuts.

November 28, 2011-December 4, 2011

Swimming: Spencer Rose, Sophomore, Brookfield, Wis./Central
Rose competed in a number of relays and swam well this past weekend at the UW-River Falls Falcon Invitational. Rose was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished in fourth place with a time of 3:12.48.

Diving: Nick Badilla, Junior, Appleton, Wis./North
At the St. Cloud State University Diving Invite this weekend, Badilla took fifth in both the one and three-meter dives. In the one-meter, he scored 478.90 while he finished with a 465.90 in the three-meter. Both scores were national qualifying marks.

November 14, 2011-November 20, 2011

Swimming: Jake McDade, Freshman, Monona, Wis./Monona Grove
At two meets this weekend, McDade won two individual events with season-best times and was part of a winning relay team Friday while he swam in six events Saturday at the River City Relays. On Friday at River Falls, he won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.90 while taking the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:00.98. He also swam for the 200-yard freestyle team, which won with a time of 1:33.27.

November 7, 2011-November 13, 2011

Swimming: Corey Groshens, Junior, St. Louis Park, Minn./Hopkins
Groshens was part of three wins this weekend as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh 159-83. He tallied two individual victories in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard individual medley with respective times of 2:17.81 and 4:30.19. He was also part of a winning 400-yard medley relay team that finished with a time of 3:43.70.

Diving: Nick Badilla, Junior, Appleton, Wis./North
Badilla represented the Blugolds in two diving competitions as they defeated UW-Oshkosh 159-83. He earned two runner-up finishes in both the one and three-meter dives with respective provisional scores of 289.50 and 325.20.

October 24, 2011-October 30, 2011

Swimming: Alex Card, Sophomore, Prior Lake, Minn.
Card recorded the best finishes for Eau Claire on Saturday, placing second twice, as the Blugolds competed against St. Cloud State University and UW-Stevens Point. Card raced to second in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke competitions with respective times of 59.91 and 2:14.18.
