2011 Football Athletes of the Week

November 7, 2011-November 13, 2011

Offense: David Goodman, Wide Receiver, 6-1, 182, Senior, Neenah, Wis.
Goodman led the Blugolds with 93 receiving yards this weekend, catching seven passes, as the team defeated UW-River Falls 27-21. He capped off a good career with the Blugolds by breaking the school's all-time career receiving yards record. Goodman finished his career with 2,348 receiving yards, surpassing Matt Evensen's record of 2,293 set five years ago. Goodman also finished third on the Blugolds' pass receptions list with 153 in his career and tied for third in pass reception touchdowns with 18 (record is 20).

Defense: Coltan Ellis, Safety, 6-2, 197, Sophomore, Rice Lake, Wis.
Ellis had the second-most tackles for the Blugolds on Saturday as they beat UW-River Falls 27-21. Ellis recorded nine tackles (eight solo, one assist) while he broke up two passes. One of the broken up passes came at a critical time, late in the first half as River Falls attempted one final pass to the end zone before time expired.

Special Teams: Josh Albrecht, Kicker, 5-10, 165, Freshman, Eau Claire, Wis./North
Albrecht hit two field goals and went 3-for-3 on extra points as the Blugolds beat UW-River Falls 27-21 Saturday. He hit one field goal of 31 yards in the second quarter and nailed another one of 39 yards in the fourth quarter. For the season, he finished in fifth place on the Blugolds' all-time list for most PAT kicks made (32) while finishing fourth on the Blugolds' single-season field goals made list with nine.

October 31, 2011-November 6, 2011

Offense: Offense: Austin Goetsch, Tight End, 6-1, 227, Junior, Waunakee, Wis.
Goetsch had a career-day against UW-Whitewater on Saturday as he caught 11 passes for 177 yards. He played a crucial role in setting up the Blugolds' final score of the day as he had back-to-back long receptions (one of 43 yards and another of 35 yards) to get the Blugolds down the field quickly. His 177 yards rank 10th on the Blugolds' all-time list for most receiving yards in a game while his 11 catches tie for sixth.

Defense: Defense: Sean Graham, Inside Linebacker, 6-0, 207, Sophomore, Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall
Graham recorded eight tackles (six solos, two assists) against UW-Whitewater on Saturday, including a tackle-for-loss.

Special Teams: Special Teams: Jeff Aspinwall, Inside Linebacker, 6-0, 194, Freshman, Hurley, Wis.
Aspinwall played well this weekend covering kickoffs against UW-Whitewater, helping on a number of stops.

October 17, 2011-October 23, 2011

Offense: Matt Olson, Tailback, 5-11, 199, Senior, Stratford, Wis.
Olson scored a touchdown in the first quarter to help the Blugolds to a 14-0 lead against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. His score came with 36 seconds left in the quarter as he ran 16 yards to the end zone. For the game, he finished with 49 yards rushing on 15 carries and caught one pass for 25 yards.

Defense: Kalan Stittleburg, Outside Linebacker, 6-2, 210, Senior, Neillsville, Wis.
Facing UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Stittleburg finished with four tackles and led the team with one and a half tackles for loss. He had a half of a sack, which came early in the second quarter.

Special Teams: Clint Larsen, Wide Receiver, 6-0, 174, Freshman, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial
Larsen gave the Blugolds a lead in the third quarter against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday as he ran back a punt for a touchdown. He returned the punt 83 yards for the second longest punt return in school history. The longest is 95 yards, which happened in 1953. Larsen finished the day with 94 all-purpose yards as he also return one kickoff for 11 yards.

October 10, 2011-October 16, 2011

Offense: Paul Santi, Offensive Line, 6-1, 282, Junior, Kingsford, Mich.
Starting at center Saturday against UW-La Crosse, Santi helped the Blugolds to a 31-21 win. Santi made some keys blocks which allowed the Blugolds to rush for 168 yards and pass for 152 yards.

Defense: Jimmy Hall, Defensive Line, 6-4, 268, Junior, Howards Grove, Wis.
Hall played an important role on defense this weekend as the Blugolds beat UW-La Crosse 31-21. He finished the game with four tackles, including two and a half sacks for a loss of 21 yards. One of his sacks came late in the fourth quarter on a 4th-and-10 play, giving the Blugolds the ball back. Another sack, late in the third quarter, pushed the Eagles back eight yards and the following play La Crosse attempted a field goal from 49 yards out but it came up short.

Special Teams: David Goodman, Wide Receiver, 6-1, 182, Senior, Neenah, Wis.
Goodman blocked a punt and also caught a pass on a fake punt to help the Blugolds convert in a 31-21 win at UW-La Crosse on Saturday. In the first quarter with the Eagles on their own 34, Goodman blocked a punt that Eau Claire's Mitch Olson recovered and the Blugolds scored a touchdown on the very next drive. In the fourth quarter with the score 24-21, Goodman caught a nine-yard pass on a fake punt to give the Blugolds a first down. A few plays later, the Blugolds scored their final touchdown of the game.

October 3, 2011-October 9, 2011

Offense: Mike O'Connell, Wide Receiver, 5-10, 168, Junior, Eau Claire, Wis./Regis
O'Connell led the Blugolds with eight receptions this weekend facing UW-Oshkosh. He finished with 77 yards and had a long of 17. He played a critical role on the Blugolds' final drive of the game, catching five passes as the Blugolds went 65 yards in 13 plays over the final two minutes.

Defense: Andy Neumann, Inside Linebacker, 6-1, 228, Senior, Germantown, Wis.
Facing UW-Oshkosh this weekend, Neumann finished the game with nine tackles (seven solo, two assists), including two for a loss. He also teamed up with Jimmy Hall for a sack, one of the Blugolds' six on the day.

Special Teams: Scott Burzynski, Punter, 5-11, 192, Sophomore, Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd
Burzynski averaged 36.8 yards per punt this weekend against UW-Oshkosh. With four punts, he totaled 147 yards and placed one inside the 20 yard line. He had a long of 42.

September 26, 2011-October 2, 2011

Offense: Austin Neu, Quarterback, 6-1, 200, Junior, Iron Ridge, Wis./Hustisford
Neu had a career day as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stout 24-10. Neu completed 19 passes on 24 attempts and finished with a career-high 349 yards passing. His previous career-high was 344 yards which he reached against Stout one year ago. He threw two touchdowns, one of 23 yards and another of 29 yards.
Also Selected Conference Player of the Week

Defense: Chris Olson, Cornerback, 6-0, 193, Senior, Stratford, Wis.
Olson finished with seven solo tackles as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stout 24-10 Saturday. He also broke up a pass on the Blue Devils' opening drive, forcing a fourth and long.

Special Teams: Landen Strilzuk, Safety, 6-0, 152, Freshman, Luck, Wis.
Strilzuk had a good weekend on special teams as the Blugolds beat UW-Stout 24-10. He returned one kickoff for 20 yards and had a solo tackle on a kickoff, allowing the returner just six yards.

September 19, 2011-September 25, 2011

Offense: Matt Withrow, Offensive Line, 6-4, 281, Senior, Platteville, Wis.
Starting at left tackle, Withrow played a key row in the Blugolds' success Saturday as they beat UW-River Falls 38-17 in a non-conference game. All five of the Blugolds' touchdowns came on the ground and Withrow helped clear the way for the Blugolds to rack up 177 yards of rushing. He also helped keep the backfield clear, allowing quarterback Austin Neu to throw for 194 yards.

Defense: Pat Hendricks, Defensive Line, 6-0, 299, Junior, Clintonville, Wis.
As the Blugolds defeated UW-River Falls 38-17 this weekend in a non-conference game, Hendricks made one sack and recorded another tackle-for-loss. His first tackle-for-loss came on the Falcons' second drive of the game while his second, which was a sack for a six yard loss, came near the end of the second quarter.

Special Teams: Mitch Olson, Safety, 6-1, 193, Sophomore, New Auburn, Wis./Chi-Hi
Olson recovered a fumble on a kickoff and also recorded one tackle on special teams as the Blugolds beat UW-River Falls 38-17 in a non-conference matchup Saturday. In the first quarter after the Blugolds scored their second touchdown, Olson got down the field quickly on the following kickoff and was able to pick up a loose ball. The drive ended the with a field goal to give the Blugolds a 17-0 lead.

September 5, 2011-September 11, 2011

Offense: Austin Neu, Quarterback, 6-1, 200, Junior, Iron Ridge, Wis./Hustisford
Neu was a key factor this weekend in the Blugolds' 47-19 victory over 25th-ranked St. John's University (Minn.). He threw for three touchdowns and finished with 242 yards passing with 13 completions on 18 attempts. Neu also ran for a touchdown as he recorded a total of 37 yards on the ground. On one of his rushing attempts, he took the ball 31 yards on a 3rd-and-19 to get a first down and keep the drive alive. Later in the drive, he threw his first touchdown pass of the day. His second touchdown pass of the day came on a 52-yard toss to Jesse Linsmeyer.

Defense: Chad Samuelson, Safety, 6-1, 190, Senior, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall
Samuelson helped the Blugolds to a 47-19 victory over 25th-ranked St. John's University (Minn.) as he recorded two solo tackles. One of his tackles forced the Johnnies into a fourth down and the Johnnies went for it but the Blugolds stopped them to get the ball back. The Blugolds then scored on the ensuing drive to go up 31-0.

Special Teams: Josh Albrecht, Kicker, 5-10, 165, Freshman, Eau Claire, Wis./North
Albrecht scored 11 points this weekend as the Blugolds defeated 25th-ranked St. John's University (Minn.) in Collegeville. He hit five out of six extra points while also nailing two long field goals. His first field goal of 39 yards came in the second quarter to give the Blugolds a 21-0 lead while he had a second one of 42 yards, tying for the 15th longest field goal in school history, to give the Blugolds a 40-13 lead in the fourth quarter.

August 29, 2011-September 4, 2011

Offense: Jesse Linsmeyer, Wide Receiver, 5-11, 180, Senior, Cameron, Wis.
Linsmeyer led the Blugolds with 89 receiving yards Saturday as the Blugolds opened at Bethel University (Tenn.). He caught three passes, one of which was a 65-yard touchdown reception. The touchdown gave the Blugolds a 14-7 advantage in the third quarter but a touchdown by Bethel with only 13 seconds left to play lifted the Wildcats to the victory.

Defense: Kalan Stittleburg, Outside Linebacker, 6-2, 210, Senior, Neillsville, Wis.
Opening the season at Bethel University (Tenn.) the Blugolds played tough but fell short in the closing seconds by a score of 26-21. In the game, Stittleburg finished with a team-high seven tackles, including two tackles-for-loss. He also combined with Jake Safstrom for a sack, which forced the Wildcats into a fourth and long situation and a punt. The following drive, the Blugolds scored a touchdown to take a 14-7 lead.

Special Teams: Austin Murphy, Cornerback, 6-0, 176 Junior, Rhinelander, Wis.
While the Blugolds fell 26-21 in the final seconds at Bethel University (Tenn.) on Saturday, Murphy played his position well. He was always where he needed to be and did a good job keeping Bethel's special teams in check.
