2006 Football Athletes of the Week
October 30, 2006-November 5, 2006
Offense: "Matt Evensen, Wide Receiver, 6-3, 200, Senior, Junction City, WI/Auburndale"
Evensen had a record-setting day as the Blugolds lost a tight 25-21 game to UW-Oshkosh. Evensen had seven receptions for 129 yards and one touchdown to lead all receivers on the day. Evensen and quarterback Kyle Paulson connected on a 48-yard touchdown strike, the 20th touchdown of his career, with 7:56 remaining in the game to give the Blugolds a 21-18 lead. Evensen now has 169 receptions n the season breaking the school record of 165 set by Chris Herzog from 1987-90 and the career touchdown record of 19 set by Tom Saskowski from 1981-84. Evensen is tied for third on the career receiving yardage record list with 2,178 yards and needs just 55 yards to break the record of 2,232 held by Tom Saskowski from 1981-84.
Defense: "Matt Ebner, Defensive End, 6-1, 225, Sophomore, Mindoro, WI/Melrose-Mindoro"
Ebner was part of a defense the held UW-Oshkosh to 10 points through the first three quarters but was unable to hold off a fourth-quarter Titan comeback as the Blugolds lost 25-21 on Senior Day. Ebner recorded three total tackles on the day, two solo and one assisted, including one tackle for loss equaling one yard.

Polifka returned two punts for 31 yards as the Blugolds lost 25-21 to UW-Oshkosh on Senior Day. Polifka's longest return was 19 yards which was the longest punt return of the day for either team. Polifka leads the WIAC in punt return average at 11.7 yards a touch. He is the only WIAC punt returner who averages double-digit yardage per return.

Offense: "Kyle Paulson, Quarterback, 6-4, Sophomore, Amery, WI"
Paulson helped lead the Blugolds to a 17-3 lead but were unable to withstand a Pointer comeback as the Blugolds lost a hard-fought 20-17 game to UW-Stevens Point in overtime. Paulson completed 20-of-37 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown in addition to leading the Blugolds in rushing with 40 yards on just seven carries. Paulson completed passes to seven different receivers against the Pointer defense. After trailing 3-0 in the first quarter Paulson started a run of 17 unanswered Blugold points as he connected with Matthew Evensen for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 5:28 remaining in the first quarter to give the Blugolds a 7-3 lead.
Defense: "Dan Rogney, Outside Linebacker, 6-2, Senior, Auburndale, WI"
Rogney made a lot of big plays for the Blugold defense who was unable to hold off a late Pointer rally as the Blugolds dropped a tough 20-17 overtime loss to UW-Stevens Point. Rogney was second on the team with nine tackles, five solo and four assisted, to go with one quarterback hurry and one-half sack for a seven yard loss. Rogney led the Blugolds with three tackles for loss for 12 yards against the Pointers.
Special Teams: "Craig Kolb, Kicker, 6-0, Freshman, Marshfield, WI"
Kolb tied a school record for field goals made in a season as the Blugolds dropped a tough 20-17 overtime defeat to UW-Stevens Point. Leading 7-3 Kolb scored the only points by either team in the second period as he connected on a 30-yard field goal with 12:08 remaining in the half to give the Blugolds a 10-3 halftime lead. The made field goal was the 10th of the season for Kolb, tying the school record set by Mitch Schaeuble last season.
October 2, 2006-October 8, 2006
Offense: "Chris Hull, Wide Receiver, 6-4, 200, Junior, Blaine, MN/Spring Lake Park"
Hull posted big numbers in helping the Blugolds defeat UW-River Falls 23-3 in its annual Homecoming game. Hull caught six passes for 104 yards and one touchdown in the victory. Hull had the longest play from scrimmage when he caught a Kyle Paulsen pass and took it 38 yards for the touchdown with 29 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Blugolds a 13-3 lead. The scoring drive took 45 seconds and answered a Falcon score which cut the Blugold lead to 6-3. The play is the second-longest play from scrimmage this season for the Blugolds.
Defense: "Chris Below, Defensive End, 6-2, 240, Junior, Antigo, WI"
Below led a defensive charge limiting UW-River Falls to a field goal and 217 yards of total offense in a 23-3 Homecoming victory. Below finished the day with six total tackles, four assisted and two solo, good for second on the team and tops among Blugold defensive lineman.

Kolb had a big day for the Blugolds scoring 11 of the 23 points in a 23-3 Homecoming victory over UW-River Falls. Kolb connected on field goals of 41, 27 and 41 yards in addition to connecting on both point-after-touchdown attempts. For the season Kolb is a perfect 9-for-9 kicking field goals and 7-for-7 in point-after-touchdown attempts. His three field goals in a game ties a school record owned by several players. Kolb is one field goal away from tying the school record for field goals in a season and three consecutive field goals away from tying the school record for most consecutive field goals made.

Defense: "Sam Cummings, Outside Linebacker, 6-0, 240, Junior, Rochester, MN/John Marshall"
Blocked two kicks and made five tackles as the Blugolds dropped a 33-30 overtime decision to Alma College on the road. His first blocked punt led to a touchdown as Zach Paul recovered the block in the end zone. Then Cummings blocked an extra point on Alma's first score that made it 10-6.

Offense: "Eddy Kaiser, Tailback, 6-0, 195, Senior, Duluth, MN/East"
Rushed for 81 yards on 20 carries for a 4.1 average per carry and scored one touchdown to help the Blugolds claim their first win of the season with a 20-0 whitewash of Black Hills State.

Spearheaded an aggressive Blugold defense that stymied Black Hills State and recorded the team's first shutout since the second game of the 2005 season. Cummings led the team in tackles with seven including three tackles for 13 yards in losses and two sacks for 12 yards in losses. BHSU finished with minus three yards rushing in 30 attempts and only 125 yards total offense in 60 plays. The Blugold defense allowed Black Hills to penetrate the red zone only once during the game. The Blugold defense stopped BHSU 14 of 15 times on third down plays and 4 of 5 times on fourth down plays.

Kolb has gotten his chance this season due to an injury to returning veteran Mitch Schaeuble and has taken advantage of the situation. He kicked two field goals (30 and 38 yards) and converted both extra points against Black Hills. He also averaged 40 yards for four punts and booted his only kickoff 63 yards. He is the team scoring leader after two games with 11 points including three field goals in three tries.

Offense: "Matt Evensen, 6-3, 200, Senior, Wide Receiver, Junction City, WI/Auburndale"
Scored the Blugolds' only touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Kyle Paulson in the fourth quarter against nationally-ranked St. John's. Finished as the team's leading receiver with eight catches for 84 yards including a long of 29 yards.
Defense: "Ryan Schulz, 6-0, 195, Senior, Cornerback, Maple Grove, MN"
Led the team in tackles with nine as the Blugolds held nationally-ranked St. John's high-powered offense in check with just two touchdowns. One of his tackles was for loss and he also had three pass breakups. St. John's, ranked among the top five in four different national polls, had just 365 yards total offense, converted just 5 of 14 on third down plays and 2 of 5 chances in the red zone. The Blugolds actually had more first downs than the Johnnies, 18-16.
