PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's track & field team continued its outdoor season with several strong showings at the Platteville Open today.

Tom Breitbach (Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) had the best result of the day in the 5,000-meter run as he set a school record. Breitbach crossed the line second, completing the race in just 14:29.08, 10 seconds faster than the Blugolds’ previous record that was set on May 5, 1990 by Mike Monk. The time was also just four seconds short of being an automatic qualifying time for nationals.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Eric Knutson (Fr.-Brookfield, Wis./Central) had the fourth-fastest time with an effort of 10:02.64. The Eau Claire A team also recorded the fourth-best time in the 4x400 relay. The team combined for a finish of 3:23.67.

The Blugolds also recorded three fifth-best finishes. Arabin Lightfoot (Sr.-Mosinee, Wis.) laid down a time of 15.28 in the 110-meter hurdles and Andy Gerver (Jr.-Mahtomedi, Minn.) crossed the line in 57.92 in the 400-meter hurdles. Jake Zander (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) also had the fifth-quickest time in the 800-meter run with an effort of 1:55.25.

Tyler Genovese (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) had a strong day in the field. Genovese had the sixth-longest toss in the hammer throw with an attempt of 52.35 meters (171-09) and the sixth-longest throw in the discus event with an effort of 46.72 meters (153-03). Tony Sigrist (Jr.-Byron, Minn.) also finished seventh in the hammer throw and eighth in the discus throw.

A few Blugolds were also in action at the UW-River Falls Invitational this weekend, competing in the decathlon. Leading the group in River Falls was Andrew Storsveen (Sr.-Winona, Minn.) with 5,815 points in third place.

Next Friday, the Blugolds will compete in the Phil Esten Challenge. Competition is set to begin at 3 p.m. in La Crosse.
