(UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's golf team moved up one spot to finish in second place out of 10 teams at the 2010 O'Brien National Invitational today. The third-ranked Blugolds, who were in third place with 318 strokes after yesterday’s round, finished with 323 today for a total of 641. No. 1-ranked and 23-time defending national champion Methodist University (N.C.) took first place with 633 strokes while Allegheny College (Pa.) had a tournament low of 307 today to finish in third place with a two-day total of 643. Each of the institutions competing in this year’s tournament finished within the top 11 at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships last May and each school is ranked in the top 13 in the National Golf Coaches Association pre-season poll, which was released on September 1, 2010. Methodist’s Paige Caldwell, who finished as the national runner-up at last year’s NCAA Championship, took medalist honors today with 153 strokes. Leading the Blugolds was Sara Mattes (Jr.-La Crosse, Wis./Central), who tied for eighth place with 158 strokes. Emily Swift (Jr.-Onalaska, Wis.) came in 10th with 159 strokes and Catherine Wagner (So.-Austin, Minn.) was 14th with 161. Also competing was Lauren Gault (Jr.-Shorewood, Wis.) (tied-27th, 168 strokes) and Katie Maurer (Jr.-Forest Lake, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) (34th, 170 strokes). Next weekend the Blugolds will head to Marshall, Minn. for the two-day DII Mustang Invitational. The tournament will start Saturday and will conclude Sunday. |
