After losing a tough game to St. Thomas University (Minn.) last night, the Blugolds came out firing on Saturday night as they outshot St. Mary's 8-5 in the first period. Their efforts were rewarded with a late first period goal at 19:54. At this time, Shannon Nelson (Fr.-Blaine, MN) assisted Amanda Alioto (So.-Hartland, WI/Arrowhead) to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. Despite recording nine shots on goal in the second period, the score remained 1-0 after two periods of play as the Blugolds could not beat the Cardinal's goaltender Jessie Smith. However, things would change in the third period. In the third period, the Blugolds cashed in on the power play as they tallied three goals with the skater advantage. The first power play goal came from Maddi Hammer (Fr.-Owatonna, MN) at 8:03. Hammer's power play goal was assisted by Christine Knop (Fr.-Coon Rapids, MN). The second Blugold power play goal was tallied at 14:02 of the period when Christine Dickinson (Fr.-Layton, UT/Shattuck St. Mary's) fed Katie Lawler (Fr.-Cottage Grove, MN/Hill-Murray) who put the Blugolds up 3-0. Scoring the third power play goal of the night was Lauren Havard (Jr.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe). Havard scored at 15:51 of the period as Lawler and Margret Campbell (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) set her up to beat the Cardinal's goaltender Smith. Harvard's goal sealed the deal as the Blugolds would coast to a 4-0 victory during the final minutes of the game. After scoring three power play goals in the third period, the Blugolds ended up going 3-5 with the skater advantage for the night. On the other side of the ice, St. Mary's went 0-4 on the power play. In net for the Blugolds, Lindsay Savat (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN/Thomas Jefferson) turned in a great performance. In her first colligate start, Savat turned away all 13 shots she faced as she earned her first colligate victory with a shutout. The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team will return to action next weekend when they play at Concordia Friday and Saturday afternoon. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m. on Friday and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. - TT - |
