EAU CLAIRE - Becca Carstensen (Sr. -Eau Claire/Memorial) broke the school record for career blocks and career block assists as the UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team topped Superior 3-0 and Lakeland 3-1 in the first day of the Lisa Siegenthaler Memorial Tournament here tonight at the McPhee Physical Education Center.

The Blugolds improve to 12-3 on the season and have now won five straight matches. Eau Claire remains at 3-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as tournament matches do not count toward teams' conference records.

Carstensen, who tallied 17 total blocks on the evening, pushed her career total to 331 and passed Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt who set the record last year. Carstensen also recorded blocking assists No. 314 for her career, again pushing her past Wozniak-Schmidt for the all-time record.

Eau Claire opened up with a 3-0 defeat of Superior, winning by scores of 30-25, 30-27 and 30-17. The team totaled a kill percentage of .382 for the match, including hitting .520 in the third game. Carstensen and Molly Menard (Jr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) led the way with 12 kills apiece. Carstensen did not make an error in 16 attempts, good for a .750 kill percentage while also recording six blocks. Menard hit .455 for the match to go along with four defensive digs.

Carly Freiborg (So.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) tallied 39 assists in the victory while Shanna Berger (So.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) led the team with eight digs.

The Blugolds breezed through the first two games of their match with Lakeland, winning by scores of 30-17 and 30-24 before dropping the third game 27-30. The team rebounded in the fourth game with a 30-21 victory.

Eau Claire again tallied a great team kill percentage, making just 18 errors in 123 total attacks for a .341 kill percentage. Menard led the way with 15 kills while also leading the team in digs with 14. Carstensen and Jodi Dunbar (So.-Platteville) each tallied 14 kills while Jenny Wolter (Jr.-Osceola) added 11. Carstensen recorded 11 total blocks and 10 block assists on the match.

Freiborg totaled 44 assists against Lakeland while also tallying 12 digs. Berger added 11 digs in the victory.

In other action at the tournament, Stevens Point and River Falls also went 2-0 on the day as both teams beat Coe College and Edgewood. Lakeland finished 1-1, topping Luther and falling to the Blugolds, while Luther also finished at 1-1. Coe, Edgewood and Superior all went 0-2 on the day.

The tournament will wrap up tomorrow with matches beginning at 9:30. Eau Claire will battle Luther at 11:30 with semifinals held at 1:30 and the championship match held at 3:30 on center court.
