2006 Volleyball Athletes of the Week

October 30, 2006-November 5, 2006

"Carly Freiborg, Setter, 5-9, Senior, Sacred Heart, MN/Renville Country West"
Freiborg helped the Blugolds win two of three matches for the week as the Blugolds advanced to their second straight WIAC tournament championship and qualified for their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. In the quarterfinal match against UW-Stout Freiborg recorded 36 assists, four service aces and three kills in a 3-0 victory over the Blue Devils. The Blugolds dropped the first game against UW-River Falls but came back to win the next three games to post a 3-1 victory. Freiborg totaled 48 assists, 14 digs, four kills, three total blocks and two service aces in the win. Freiborg tallied 41 assists, 10 digs, three total blocks and two serving aces in a 3-1 defeat to UW-Whitewater in the WIAC tournament championship match. For the week Freiborg averaged 11.4 assists, 3.2 digs, 0.8 blocks, 0.7 kills and 0.7 service aces per game.

"Carly Freiborg, Setter, 5-9, Senior, Sacred Heart, MN/Renville Country West"
Freiborg was named to the UW-River Falls Trick or Treat All-Tournament team as the Blugolds went 4-0 over the weekend and ended the regular season with a 26-2 record. Freiborg notched 34 assists, four digs, two kills and two blocked assists in a 3-0 victory over Bethel (MN). Against UW-Superior Freiborg totaled 46 assists and six digs in a 3-0 win over the Yellowjackets. On day two against Lakeland Freiborg recorded 28 assists to go with seven block assists and five kills to defeat the Muskies 3-0. In a hard fought 3-2 victory over Millikin (IL) Freiborg ended the match with 61 assists, 16 digs, two kills, two service aces and two block assist as the Blugolds came back from an 0-2 deficit. In four matches and playing in 14 games Freiborg ended the week with 169 assists, 37 digs, 12 block assists, nine kills and five service aces. Freiborg ranks third on the Blugold career assists list with 4,723 and needs 10 more assists to move into second (Beth Brochhausen-4,732) and 181 assists away from passing school record holder Roxi McKenzie (4,903).

"Jodi Dunbar, Outside Hitter, 5-10, Senior, Platteville, WI
Also selected as WIAC Athlete of the Week"

Dunbar tied a school record for kills in a match as the Blugolds clinched a share of the conference championship with victories on the road against UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse. Returning to her hometown, Dunbar collected 29 kills hitting .349 in a 3-2 victory against the Pioneers. Dunbar tied the school record set by Marnie Blau against UW-La Crosse on September 2, 1995. In a 3-0 win at UW-La Crosse Dunbar notched a team-best 14 kills leading the Blugolds to victory and clinching a WIAC regular season championship. It is the first conference championship for the Blugolds since the 1987-88 season.

October 9, 2006-October 15, 2006

"Jess Groh, Middle Hitter, 6-0, Senior, Eau Claire, WI/North"
Groh racked up 15 kills hitting .500 for the match as the Blugolds defeated UW-Superior 3-0 to remain in a tie for first place in the WIAC. Groh also recorded five digs, four block assists and two service aces as the Blugolds improved to 20-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play. It was the Blugolds 22nd consecutive victory over the Yellowjackets.

October 2, 2006-October 8, 2006

"Shanna Berger, Libero, Senior, 5-5, Baldwin, WI/Baldwin-Woodville"
Berger played big in the back row for the Blugolds who went 2-1 in WIAC play this week. Berger tallied 16 digs with three service ace in a 3-0 victory over UW-Stout. In a 3-2 loss to 16th-ranked UW-Whitewater Berger led all players with 32 digs in addition to one service ace. Rebounding with a 3-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point Berger recorded 17 digs. For the week Berger averaged 5.9 digs per match for the week as the Blugolds improved to 19-2 overall and tied for first place with Whitewater for the conference lead at 4-1.

September 25, 2006-October 1, 2006

"Carly Freiborg, Setter, Sr., Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West"
Freiborg has a big week in helping the Blugolds go 5-0 on the week and winning the Augustana (IL) Invitational. In a 3-1 conference road victory at UW-River Falls Freiborg notched 46 assists, four kills, two service aces and one block assist in the win. At Augustana the Blugolds went a perfect 4-0 winning 12 of 13 games played. Freiborg earned All-Tournament honors averaging 42 assists and 9.5 digs per match at the tournament. Freiborg's biggest numbers came against St. Ambrose (IA) where she recorded 57 assists, 13 digs, four service aces, four block assists and two kills in the 3-1 victory. The Blugolds are 17-1 overall this season and 2-0 in conference play.

September 18, 2006-September 24, 2006

"Carly Freiborg, Setter, Sr., Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West"
Freiborg recorded a game-high 36 assists as the Blugolds, ranked fifth in the latest AVCA poll, defeated 11th-ranked UW-Oshkosh 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-19). Freiborg notched 13 digs, three service aces, three kills and three blocking assists in the victory. With the win the Blugolds improve their record to 12-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

September 11, 2006-September 17, 2006

"Jodi Dunbar, 5-10, Senior, Outside Hitter, Platteville"
Named to the seven-player All-Tournament team in the Gargoyle Classic hosted by the University of Chicago. The Blugolds emerged as the only unbeaten team in the field. After coming back from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 win against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Blugolds notched 3-0 triumphs against Chicago, Illinois College and Lake Forest. Dunbar hit .281 for the tournament with 71 kills in the 14 games for a 5.07 kills/game average. She also was involved in 10 blocks and had seven digs. The nationally-ranked Blugolds improved their season record to 11-1.

September 4, 2006-September 10, 2006

"Jess Groh, 6-0, Senior, Middle Hitter, Eau Claire/North HS"
Named to the All-Tournament team in the Augsburg Invitational. Second consecutive week she has been named to an All-Tournament team and selected the Blugold player of the week. Hit .350 to lead the Blugolds to a second-place finish in the eight-team tournament. The Blugolds breezed to 3-0 triumphs over Macalester, Northwestern (Roseville, MN) and Wisconsin Lutheran before losing a 3-0 decision to No. 12-ranked University of St. Thomas. Groh had 41 kills in 11 games in addition to six service aces and 17 blocks.

August 28, 2006-September 3, 2006

"Jess Groh, 6-0, Senior, Middle Hitter, Eau Claire, WI/North"
Hit .539 for the weekend as the Blugolds breezed through their own Labor Day Classic as the only unbeaten team with a 4-0 record. Included in the wins was a 3-1 decision over No. 17-ranked Central College of Iowa, the 1998-99-00 NCAA Division III national champion. Groh accounted for 48 kills in 11 games with just seven errors. She had 18 kills in the match against Central. She also was in on 14 blocks and had five service aces.
