2004 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

April 26, 2004-May 2, 2004

Track: Jen Stafslien, Jr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien was one of two Blugolds with first-place finishes at the St. Thomas Invite in St. Paul, Minn. She won the 100-meter hurdles competition with a time of 14.65 seconds. The time was an outdoor season best for her and provisionally qualified her for national competition. The time places her fifth in the nation in the event.

Field: Laura Tamm, Sr., Brillion
Tamm provisionally qualified in the discus competition at the St. Thomas Invite. Her throw of 44.19 meters (144-11) is good for the eighth best in the country and is nearly two meters better than her previous season high.

April 12, 2004-April 18, 2004

Track: Jen Stafslien, Jr., Onalaska, WI (West Salem)
Stafslien won the 100-meter hurdles at the seven-team Eau Claire Open with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14.83. Defeating her next closest competitor by .27 seconds, Stafslien's effort is the seventh fastest time posted among NCAA Division III schools this season.

Field: Ashley Nelson, Jr., Darwin, MN (Litchfield)
Nelson recorded four-first place finishes, breaking one school and two facility records in the process as the Blugolds won the seven-team Eau Claire Open. Nelson posted the second-longest long jump in NCAA Division III this season covering 18-7.75. The jump broke a 22-year old school record of 18-4 set by Julie Pankow in 1982. The mark was also set a Simpson Track facility record. Nelson would set her second facility record of the day winning the triple jump with a leap of 36-10.5. Nelson won the 100-meter dash by .38 seconds with a time of 12.48. The time was .07 seconds off the school record set by Peg Peelman of 12.41 in 1996. Nelson was also the anchor of the first-place 4 x 100 meter relay team posting a season-best 49.49.

April 5, 2004-April 11, 2004

Track: Jen Stafslien, Jr., Onalaska, WI (West Salem)
Stafslien won the 100-meter hurdles at the five-team Carleton (MN) Invitational with a time of 15.34. Stafslien defeated her next closest competitor by .37 seconds.

Track: Betsy Kaminske, Fr., Waupaca, WI
Kaminske took second place at the five-team Carleton (MN) Invitational clearing 10-11.75. The effort was a career best in addition to being an NCAA provisional qualifying distance.

March 29, 2004-April 4, 2004

Track: Melissa Wright, Sr., Appleton (Kimberly)
Wright set a meet, venue, and Eau Claire school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Norse Relays hosted by Luther College. Wright posted a time of 11:26.77 in the event, claiming first place and leading Eau Claire to a third place finish. She broke her own record of 11:39.79 in the event, set last May.

Field: Jen Stafslien, Jr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien totaled 28 points for the Blugolds at the WIAC Indoor Championships with first place finishes in the long jump and the 55-meter hurdles and a second place finish in the triple jump. She won the long jump competition on the opening day of the event with a jump of 17-8 ', a jump that provisionally qualifies her for national competition. During the second day of the championships, Stafslien set the WIAC record in the hurdles with a time of 8.28 seconds and jumped 37-11 ' meters in the triple jump. Both efforts exceeded the provisional for NCAA qualifying standards.

February 21, 2004-February 29, 2004

Field: Jen Stafslien, Jr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien led the Blugolds to a third place finish out of eight teams at the Pointer Invitational in Stevens Point as she claimed three first place finishes. Stafslien ran the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.44 second in the preliminaries to improve her national qualifying time and send her to the finals, where she ran an 8.45 to win the event. She also won two events in the field, claiming long jump with a distance of 5.51 (18-1) meters and first in the triple jump with a distance of 11.05 (36-3) meters.

Track: Andrea Rude, Fr., Onalaska
Rude vaulted a national provisionally qualifying height of 3.27 meters (10-8 ?) to claim third place in the event at the John Zuerlein Invitational held in La Crosse. The Blugolds took second place at the event with a score of 180.025.

February 16, 2004-February 22, 2004

Track: Katie Miller, Sr., Green Bay (Preble)
Miller posted two season-best times in leading the Blugolds to a third place finish out of eight teams at the Blue Devil Invite. Her season-best time of 7.58 seconds in the 55-meter dash was good for second place overall while her season-best time of 27.66 seconds in the 200-meter dash was good for fifth place.

Field: Erin Trench, Fr., Shoreview, MN (Mounds View)
Trench posted a season-best jump in the high jump of 1.46 meters. The jump led her to a fifth place finish in the competition and the Blugolds to a third place finish at the Blue Devil Invite.

February 2, 2004-February 8, 2004

Track: Sarah Kasabian, So., East Peoria, IL (E.P.C.H.S.)
Kasabian posted two lifetime bests at the Warren Bowlus Invitational in which the Blugolds took third place out of seven teams. Kasabian claimed third-place finishes in each the 800-meter run and the 1500-meter run while also breaking personal records in each event. She finished the 800-meter run in a time of 2:24.83 and earned third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:48.87.

Field: Betsy Kaminske, Fr., Waupaca
The freshman Kaminski continued her strong season in the pole vault competition as she took first place in the event at the Warren Bowlus Invitational and helped the Blugolds to a third place finish. She earned the first place finish by clearing a mark of 3.26 meters, a distance high enough to provisionally qualify her for national competition.

January 26, 2004-February 1, 2004

Field: Jen Stafslein, Jr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien powered the Blugold team that demolished seven other teams at the UW-Stout Open as the Blugolds won the event by more than 40 points. Stafslien finished with three first place finishes and a third place finish in the event. She earned her way into the finals of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.53 seconds and won the event with a time of 8.68 seconds. Her time of 8.53 seconds ties her personal record and got her into NCAA national competition last season. She also finished in third place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.68 seconds. Stafslien dominated in the jumping competitions taking first place in both the long jump (5.25 meters) and the triple jump (11.19 meters). Her distance in the triple jump provisionally qualifies her for national competition.

Field: Betsy Kaminski, Fr., Waupaca
Kaminski played a big role in the Blugolds first place finish out of eight teams at the UW-Stout Open as she took first place in the pole vault competition. She earned the first place finish with a jump of 3.22 meter, good for a provisional qualification to national competition.

January 19, 2004-January 25, 2004

Field: Jen Stafslein, Jr., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien provisionally qualified for national competition in two events at the UWEC Invitational. She took first place in the 55 meter hurdles and qualified provisionally for nationals with a time of 8.59 seconds. She also qualified for nationals in the triple jump with a distance of 11.20 meters while also taking third place in the long jump competition with a jump of 5.30 meters.

Field: Chelsea Romportl, Fr., Rice Lake
Romportl took first place in the pole vault competition at the UWEC Invitational and provisionally qualified for national competition in the event. She earned the first place finish by clearing a height of 3.26 meters.

January 12, 2004-January 18, 2004

Track: Sarah Kasabian, Sr., East Peoria, IL
Kasabian performed very well at the St. Thomas Triangular on Friday where no team scores were kept. She participated in the 1500 meter run and finished in a time of 4:55.40.

Field: Erin Kokta, Jr., Brookfield (East)
Kokta did well in two events a the St. Thomas Triangular as she won the long jump with a distance of 5.30 meters (17-04.75) and posted a lifetime best in the triple jump with a distance of 10.67 meters (35-00.25).
