2003 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

April 28, 2003-May 4, 2003

Track: Breanna McMullen, Jr., Fall Creek
McMullen medaled in five different events at the WIAC Championships hosted by UW-Stevens Point. McMullen won the 400 hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 1:02.52 and finished second in the 100 hurdles with a provisional time of 14.82 seconds. With McMullen the Blugolds finished second in the 400 and 1,600-meter relays with times of 49.09 and 3:59.41. The 400 relay time was also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. McMullen also finished eighth in the 200 with a time of 26.66 seconds.

Field: Jennifer Stafslein, So., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien had a big weekend in both the long and triple jump at the WIAC Championships. Stafslien finished third in the triple jump with school record and NCAA provisional mark of 38-2 (11.63 m) while finishing third in the long jump with a provisional mark of 18-1.5 (5.52 m). Stafslien was also a conference champion in the 100 hurdles, winning the event with a NCAA provisional time of 14.73 seconds.

April 21, 2003-April 27, 2003

Track: Breanna McMullen, Jr., Fall Creek
McMullen won one event and finished second in another at this weekends UW-La Crosse Classic. McMullen took first in the 400 meter hurdles and provisionally qualified for national competition with a time of 1:03.13. She also took second in the high hurdles competition.

Field: Jennifer Stafslein, So., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien took two first place finishes home from the UW-La Crosse Classic hosted by La Crosse as she won both the triple jump and the hurdles. Stafslien provisionally qualified for national competition with her first place effort in the triple jump.

April 14, 2003-April 20, 2003

Field: Rachel Becker, Fr., Gilmanton
Becker reached a provisional qualifying mark of 18-1 (5.51 m) to win the long jump competition at the Manitou Classic hosted by St. Olaf College. Becker had the longest jump of the day by 3.5 inches and was the only competitor to break the 18-foot mark.

Track: Heidi Hancock, So., Greendale
Hancock set a career personal best time in the 5,000-meter run to finish 6th in the event with a time of 19:44.47.

April 7, 2003-April 13, 2003

Track: Breanna McMullen, Jr., Fall Creek
McMullen had a phenomenal performance at the St. Thomas Invitational though no team scores were kept. McMullen provisionally qualified for national competition in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles. In the 100 meter event, McMullen took first place with a time of 14.60 while also finishing in first place in the 400 meter competition with a time of 1:04.36.

Field: Jennifer Stafslein, So., Onalaska (West Salem)
Stafslien took a first place and two second place finishes at last weekends St. Thomas Invitational. She earned a provisional qualification for national competition in the long jump while winning the competition with a jump of 5.52 meters. She took second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.86 meters while also finishing second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.12 seconds.

March 3, 2003-March 9, 2003

Field: Jackie Bloemendaal
The freshman had a spectacular performance at the WIAC Indoor Championships where the Blugolds finished in fourth place. On Friday, Bloemendaal took first place in the high jump competition with a jump of 1.65 meters. The height met the NCAA standards for a provisional cut. On Saturday, Bloemendaal continued her great weekend with a fifth place finish in the pentathlon with a score of 2507.

Track: Sarah Kasabian, Jr., East Peoria, IL (E.P.C.H.S.)
Set two personal records while leading the Blugolds to a fourth place finish at the WIAC Indoor Championships held in Oshkosh. Kasabian broke a personal best and grabbed third place in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:19.43 on Friday. On the second day of competition, Kasabian broke another personal record with a fifth place finish in the 3,000 meter run, covering the distance in 10:37.38.

February 24, 2003-March 3, 2003

Field: Danielle Brabender, So., Cottage Grove (Monona Grove)
Brabender grabbed a third place finish at the Ole Open in the high jump. Her jump of 1.60 meters was a personal best for the sophomore competitor. Her jump was just as high as the winner though she finished in third after the competition.

Track: Breanna McMullen, Jr., Fall Creek
Took a first place finish at the Ole Open held in St. Olaf in the 55 meter hurdles. No team scores were kept during the competition, but Mc Mullen grabbed a first place finish in the event with a time of 8.38. The time broke the school record of 8.39 also set by Mc Mullen.

February 3, 2003-February 9, 2003

Field: Jen Stafslein, So., Onalaska (West Salem)
Led the Blugolds to a third place finish at the Bowlus Invitational hosted by UW-Stout. Stafslien took first place in the 55-meter hurdle event with a time of 8.65. She also took a first place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.25 meters. Along with the pair of first place finishes, Stafslien added a second place finish in the triple jump with a lifetime best distance of 10.73 meters.

Track: Sarah Kasabian, Jr., East Peoria, IL (E.P.C.H.S.)
Was a big part of the third place finish the Blugolds posted at the Bowlus Invitational as she took second place in the 3000 meter run. Not only did she finish runner-up in the event, she shattered her lifetime best in the competition by over 20 seconds.

January 20, 2003-January 26, 2003

Track: Rebecca Brandner, Sr., Eau Claire (Regis)
Brandner was the leadoff in the Blugolds 4x200 meter relay which won the relay with a time of 1:50.15. Her performance in the relay competition led the Blugolds to a first place finish out of three teams at the UWEC Blugold Open which including topping WIAC opponent UW-Superior.

Field: Carrie Bruce, So., Muskego
Took second in the weight throw and third in the shot put at the UWEC Blugold Open. Her distance of 10.72 meters is a new personal record in the shot put.

January 13, 2003-January 19, 2003

Field: Stephanie Barnes, Pole Vault, Fr., Sauk Prairie
Set a new school record as a freshman in the pole vault while competing at the Falcon Early Bird. She took first place in the pole vault clearing a height of 3.05 meters (10'0').

Field: Jen Stafslein, Multiple events, So., Onalaska (West Salem)
Took first place in both the 55 meter hurdles and the long jump at the Blugolds season opener in the Falcon Early Bird. No team scores were kept during the competition. Stafslien won the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.01. In the long jump Stafslien's jump of 5.27 meters was good for first place while she also took second place in the triple jump with a length of 10.63 meters in her first ever time participating in the event.
