2010-11 Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week

January 17, 2011-January 23, 2011

Swimming: Jon Poppele, Junior, Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata
Poppele recorded three second place finishes this weekend at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational, where the Blugolds finished in third place out of six teams. He came away with season-best times in all his races, taking second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.81), 400-yard individual medley (4:19.83) and 200-yard individual medley (2:00.69). He was also a part of two relay teams that were also very competitive.

Diving: Nick Badilla, Sophomore, Appleton, Wis./North
Badilla finished second in both the one and three-meter dives this weekend at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational, where the Blugolds finished in third place out of six teams. Achieving national cuts, he scored 434.75 points in the one-meter event while he finished with 495.65 in the three-meter dive.

November 29, 2010-December 5, 2010

Swimming: Alex Plaetzer, Junior, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall
Plaetzer recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.78 this weekend at the UW-River Falls Falcon Invitational at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. He also finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.13.

November 15, 2010-November 21, 2010

Swimming: Alex Plaetzer, Junior, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall
Plaetzer won one event and had the best time in another Friday as the Blugolds beat River Falls 106-28 at McPhee. He took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.87 while picking up the top time in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 49.82. He was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay that finished with the third-best time. On Saturday at the La Crosse relays, his best finish came in the 200-yard freestyle relay which the Blugolds claimed a fourth place spot with a time of 1:30.83.

Diving: Nick Badilla, Sophomore, Appleton, Wis./North
Badilla broke a 13-year old pool record and had a national b-cut score of 335.70 as he won the three-meter dive while the Blugolds beat River Falls 106-28 Friday. He also took first in the one-meter event with a mark of 271.85.

November 8, 2010-November 14, 2010

Swimming: Corey Groshens, Sophomore, St. Louis Park, Minn./Hopkins
Groshens was part of two first place finishes as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh 102-44 on Saturday. Groshens had a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.33 while he was part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team and finished with a season-best split in his portion. He also had the top time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:16.78.

October 25, 2010-October 31, 2010

Diving: Nick Badilla, Sophomore, Appleton, Wis./North
Facing UW-Stevens Point and St. Cloud State University on Saturday, Badilla scored a runner-up finish in the one-meter dive with a score of 264.40while he earned a third place finish in the three-meter diving competition with a final number of 277.30. He missed national cuts by just 11 and 13 points on the one and three-meter boards.

October 11, 2010-October 17, 2010

Swimming: Alex Plaetzer, Junior, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall
Plaetzer won two races, coming in first in the 50 and 100-yard butterflies as the Blugolds fell just short against Minnesota State-Mankato 155.5-138.5 on Friday. He finished with a time of 55.61 in the 100-yard event while finishing in a time of 24.76 in the 50-yard event. He was also part of the 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay teams that took second.

Diving: Elliot Campbell, Freshman, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial
In his first collegiate meet, Campbell won the three-meter dive with 210.80 points as the Blugolds fell just short against Minnesota State-Mankato 153.5-140.5 on Friday. He also finished third with 176.90 points in the one-meter dive.
